In celebration of NAIDOC week this week, it provides another opportunity to reflect on our 2021 Indigenous Dress which draws inspiration from this year's NAIDOC week theme.
NAIDOC week represents another chance for all Australians to come together to celebrate the rich history, diverse cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the oldest continuing cultures on the planet.
The NAIDOC 2021 theme – Heal Country – calls for all of us to continue to seek greater protections for our lands, our waters, our sacred sites and our cultural heritage from exploitation, desecration, and destruction. It asks us to embrace Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ cultural knowledge and understanding of Country as part of Australia's national heritage. Heal Country, heal our nation.
GIANTS’ Indigenous Dress designer, Krystall Daliinger, drew inspiration from this year’s theme of ‘Heal Country’ when designing the 2021 artwork.
Dallinger spoke of the theme as one of the most important things to be doing at the moment and called on the community to reconnect with oldergenerations.
“We did lose a lot of knowledge because of the stolen generation,” said Dallinger.
“Healing country is all about educating ourselves now and regaining that education so that we can get our culture back and as alive as we can which will allow us to pass it down to future generations.”
Dallinger said NAIDOC Week is important for every Indigenous person and is an opportunity for people to become more educated.
“Hopefully it inspires people to connect to their own culture and find out more about where they came from.
“It’s such a learning journey for all of us and that’s what makes it amazing.”
Netball NSW acknowledges the Aboriginal lands and waters on which we build our courts, clubhouses, and facilities that are essential to our game as ancient and respected ground, and we acknowledge the significant and ongoing contribution of local Aboriginal communities throughout the Netball NSW community.
