It was a trip back in time for Sophie Dwyer earlier this month. Back to a time that wasn’t even that long ago. Back to her primary school.
Dwyer returned to St Kevin’s Primary School as part of the GIANTS’ community engagement strategy which has seen the team visit more than 30 schools and associations this year.
“It was like a step back in time,” she said.
“Some of the teachers from my time at the school were still there and the school itself hasn’t changed much at all.”
St Kevin’s Primary can somewhat be to thank for founding Sophie Dwyer as a netballer.
It’s where she first started playing netball and where she transitioned from WA to GA.
And it’s no surprise that one of her fondest memories was a netball related one.
“Being a part of St Kevin’s first ever netball grand final win in 2012 – it was U12’s, division three and it was a come from behind win,” Dwyer said.
Her return to the Eastwood-located school involved sharing her netball journey and how she progressed from St Kevin’s to the GIANTS and Diamonds and also took part in a Q&A.
Dwyer has also recently visited Eastwood Ryde Netball Association to assist with their end of season presentation.
‘As a team, we love getting out in the community,” she said.
“Whilst it is great to give back and stay connected to the people and places that were a big part of our early days as a netballer, it is just as important to be involved outside direct netball circles, like schools, to help grow netball and the GIANTS brand across a wider demographic.”
Dwyer is currently training as part of her involvement in the Australian Diamonds Squad and will be part of the upcoming Constellation Cup against New Zealand.
