From the AIS to the Swifts, Firebirds, Fever, Magpies and of course the GIANTS, April Brandley has won fans and respect on and off the court across a brilliant 13-year career.
Sports journalist, GIANTS Netball ambassador and April Brandley Fan Club member, Megan Hustwaite compiled these tributes from some who have been part of her journey.
Lisa Alexander, former Australian Diamonds coach:
“I first saw April at a Junior Nationals final playing for NSW in GK. The iconic blonde ponytail flowing behind as she intercepted like Liz Ellis out of the circle. One element that was always evident was her work ethic, attitude and smile. No one was happier than I was to tell her she was in her first Diamonds Team in 2015. The gold dress was made for April and she was a highly valued member of our defence end. April was like a daughter to myself and when she married and had baby Clay I was over the moon. She retires a champion in every respect!”
Sharni Norder, former AIS, Swifts, Diamonds and Magpies teammate:
“April Brandley. You vibrant, vivacious human you. How lucky I am to have shared my journey alongside you. From the AIS in 2009 (causing a ruckus!) to Swifts in 2014, watching you work so hard to fight for a starting position at Fever and then reuniting at the mighty Pies. Yet, my most favourite part was doing yoga and meditation with you on our Aussie Diamonds tours. I hope you're so proud of what you achieved. But even more so of the daughter, friend, wife and mother you are. You are a special human that will always have a spot in my heart and I wish you all the very best for your life after being an athlete.”
Natalie Medhust, former Diamonds, Firebirds, Fever and Magpies teammate:
“Having played alongside Apey was a privilege. Off court, she was down to earth, funny and just a truly genuine and kind person. I think sometimes we may have laughed more at her than with her but she could always make someone smile. On court, she was hard working, competitive, had incredible closing speed and hands over pressure. Her achievements in coming back to the sport as a mum and the way in which she has continued to push herself is a testament to her.”
Julie Fitzgerald, GIANTS coach:
“As a talented NSW junior, she was someone I had admired and wanted to coach for a little while, so it’s been a privilege to have had the opportunity to coach her. April has brought so much to this team both on and off the court and has helped shaped the standards and culture that help make the Giants who we are. April, Clay and Jason’s presence will be deeply missed, but we wish the Brandley family all the best in the next chapter.”
