At just 20 years of age, Sophie Dwyer has made her Origin Australian Diamonds debut.
Dwyer shot onto the scene in the 2021 Suncorp Super Netball season, earning the league’s Rising Star Award and being invited to the two-week Diamonds training camp following the completion of the season.
The star shooter was named in squad for the January Quad Series tour in England but didn’t take the court.
Now, at the end of just her second full season in the SSN competition, the Eastwood Ryde junior was presented her first Diamonds dress on Saturday night and was named the following day in Sunday’s squad for the second game of the Constellation Cup.
In her usual cool, calm and collected way, Dwyer entered the game during the third quarter and got straight to work.
It was a short but impactful appearance, with the young star shooting 6/7.
“It was a moment I will remember forever,” Dwyer said.
“To put on this dress and represent my country is something I’ve dreamt of for as long as I can remember.
“I’m so grateful to be a part of this group and to debut alongside Maddy Proud and Ruby Bakewall-Doran was really special.”
Sunday’s match featured fellow GIANTS Jamie-Lee Price and Amy Parmenter, with the pair named in the starting seven.
The Diamonds have since returned to Australian soil with the next match in the series to be played at John Cain Arena in Melbourne on Wednesday.
