In the realm of sports, milestones aren't merely markers of time, they are the representations of dedication, perseverance and talent.
Such is the case with Julie Fitzgerald, who this Saturday will notch up her 400th game as a coach at the National League level.
Her ever-evolving games count is not just a number but a testament to her unparalleled legacy in our great game.
Fitzgerald, a name synonymous with excellence in the world of netball, has carved her path through decades of unwavering commitment and passion for the sport.
Following a traditional pathway into the coaching industry, the former Ku-ring-gai Cenovis coach begun her games record count with the Sydney Swifts in 1997 at the start of the Commonwealth Bank Trophy series.
During her 15 seasons and 235 games with the Swifts (known as both the Sydney Swifts and NSW Swifts during her time), Fitzgerald won five premierships and helped develop some of the game’s most recognisable names.
After her successful stint with the GIANTS’ now cross-town rivals, the four-time Coach of the Year was head-hunted for the role of head coach at the Australian Institue of Sport in Canberra, where she once again played a pivotal role in the development of some of Australia’s best netballers.
The next chapter in Julie Fitzgerald’s coaching career involved a change in scenery, relocating from her Hume Highway commute and making the move to New Zealand’s north island to coach the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic.
Considered personally as one of the best things she’s ever done, Fitzgerald would have happily stayed on beyond her three seasons (and 47 games) if the opportunity to return home and start GIANTS Netball didn’t arise.
From the club’s inception in 2016 until today, Fitzgerald has been one of the most pivotal and influential people in the establishment and success of the club; attracting some of the world’s best netballers to relocate their lives Sydney and convincing some of the best local talent to return home and represent their state.
Throughout her coaching tenure - which is still ongoing - Fitzgerald has left an indelible mark on the netball landscape. From grassroots level to elite competitions, her influence has been profound. With a keen eye for talent and a knack for strategic brilliance, she has nurtured countless players, shaping them into champions both on and off the court.
The milestone of 400 games is not merely a reflection of longevity, it is a testament to her passion, dedication and ongoing success throughout the game's evolution.
What truly sets Fitzgerald apart is not just her tactical acumen or individual accolades and premiership success, but her ability to develop life-long relationships and her genuine care for her players.
Under her guidance, teams have not only achieved success but have done so with a sense of unity and camaraderie that speaks volumes about her leadership.
Not one to detract from the purpose of game day, the coaching great is truly focused on the game at hand and the crucial four points up for grab this Saturday.
While the super coach will look to brush off the achievements, the sea of orange that will surround the stands on Saturday will do all they can to show their appreciation for everything she has given the game.
