The GIANTS congratulate inaugural captain Kim Green on being awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to netball in the Australia Day honours.
Green was a Sutherland Shire Netball Association junior and represented the Australian Diamonds on 74 occasions, including as vice-captain from 2013-2015.
She won a bronze medal at the 2009 World Netball Series, a silver medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and gold medals at the 2011 and 2015 World Netball Championships and the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
She represented the Sydney Swifts and the AIS Canberra Darters in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy before joining the NSW Swifts in the ANZ Championship. She was a member of their 2008 premiership and captained the side for four years.
Green followed mentor Julie Fitzgerald to the GIANTS for their inaugural season in the 2017 Suncorp Super Netball competition and was named the club’s first-ever captain.
She retired from the sport at the end of 2019 but has continued to be involved in netball as a respected media commentator as well as coaching the next generation of talent at North Shore United in the NSW Premier League.
Green says the OAM was "a lot more than about me”.
"The first thing I thought about was the amazing people whose work goes into promoting the sport that I love and the sacrifices made by my family," she told The Leader.
"I have been lucky to be able to play netball," she said.
"I loved what I did and travelled the world.
"But, that would never have happened without the work done by the amazing people at all leveIs of netball.
"It's an honour to be recognised with this award, but most of the people working in netball are not recognised."
