Where and When: Sunday, 11 July, 3:00pm, John Cain Arena.
Where to watch: Telstra TV and Netball Live Official App
Last time they met: The last time the GIANTS and the Collingwood Magpies last met was in round three at the GIANTS’ home, Ken Rosewall Arena. It was the GIANTS who were hot out of the gate, securing a five-goal lead in the first five minutes of the match. The home side was dominant in the first two quarters, holding a 17-goal lead at the main break. However, they were likely to be disappointed with their second half, dropping the third and fourth quarters with the final margin reduced to 12 goals.
What it means for the GIANTS: With five games remaining – of which three are against the current top-four sides – a second win against the Magpies will be crucial to the GIANTS’ road to finals. After an unsettled performance from the GIANTS last week, it will be vital for them to bounce back this week with a solid and consistent performance.
Where’s the opposition at: Still in the race for finals, the ‘Pies will be keen to bounce back from their round eight loss and continue their bid for a finals appearance. Currently sitting seventh on the ladder - on equal points with the Thunderbirds and the Firebirds, who play each other this week - a win this week would help distinguish their position on the ladder. The ‘Pies will be backed by an extra spark, as they play at John Cain Arena in front of their home fans for the first time since round three.
The number: 70 – This weekend’s match will be the GIANTS’ 70th match in the Suncorp Super Netball competition. Jo Harten, Jamie-Lee Price and Sam Poolman have all played in every match.
Key Match Up: Jo Harten v Geva Mentor. The two most experienced players on the court would be expected to match up under the post this Sunday. No doubt familiar with each other’s game, the English Rose teammates will both be looking to lead their teams from their respective positions. Mentor will be looking to rise to the occasion as she celebrates her 200th National League match – a milestone only a handful of players have reached. As the GIANTS adapt to their current situation, we’re hoping to see Harten back at her best with her pristine shooting.
