Last time they met: The two sides last met in round six, in a GIANTS’ home game at Ken Rosewall Arena. The GIANTS had a strong opening half, outscoring the visitors in the opening two quarters to hold a five-goal lead at the main break. The Fever, dominant out of the break, went on to change the game in the third, outscoring the GIANTS 25-17 to take the lead heading into the final quarter. With the match up for grabs in the final 15 minutes, it was the GIANTS who took control of the match and the margin to snatch a satisfying one-goal victory.
What it means for the GIANTS: A win against the Magpies in round 10 put the GIANTS’ season back on track, but the winning momentum will need to continue in the final four matches to ensure they hold onto a top four position come the end of round 14. A tough task confronts them in round 11, taking on the West Coast Fever at home, with the home side coming off a disappointing loss. The past two rounds the GIANTS have had poor starts, relying on second half comebacks courtesy of double-digit Suncorp Super Shots. With a limited preparation after a mid-week game in round 10, Julie Fitzgerald will be working with her side to ensure a more consistent four-quarter performance is executed.
Where’s the Opposition at: The West Coast Fever come off a loss to the Melbourne Vixens, which also cost them top spot on the ladder. The Fever and the Vixens have been the league’s two most consistent teams in the top four so far this season. The Fever were without Jess Anstiss (injury) and Rudi Ellis (health and safety protocols) during their last match.
The Name: Jhaniele Fowler – there is no looking past arguably the best goal shooter in the world. Standing at 196cm, Fowler currently leads total goals scored with 569 goals at 96%.
The Number: 4.5 – the average margin between the two sides since the beginning of the Super Netball competition in 2017. The teams have met on 13 occasions throughout both the home and away and finals series.
The News: Here comes Harten – leading Super Shots for the past two seasons, Jo Harten and the GIANTS hadn’t been using the two-point shot as much, focusing on winning their one-point game. Following last round’s 10-goal Super Shot haul, Harten moves to second on the Super Shot leader board, just one behind England Rosesteammate Helen Housby.
