Last Time they Met: The last NSW Derby in Round 6 was a hard-fought affair, with the GIANTS showing promising moments but ultimately falling short to the ladder-leading Swifts, 82–69. Jamie-Lee Price and Jo Harten provided early spark, keeping the GIANTS in the contest through the first half. Matisse Letherbarrow entered the game half way through the third quarter and tried her best to impact with her long-range shooting but the Swifts took control in the third quarter and never looked back.
What it Means for the GIANTS: This Sunday’s clash represents a pivotal moment in the GIANTS’ 2025 campaign, as they aim to secure a third consecutive victory. After a slow start to the season, the GIANTS are beginning to hit their strides with back-to-back wins that has reignited the confidence of the GIANTS’ line-up. The composure and cohesion they showed last week suggest a team growing in maturity and intent. If they can replicate that same poise and intensity, they have every reason to believe they can challenge the ladder-leading Swifts.
What it Means for the Opposition: Despite sitting atop of the ladder (due to percentage) the Swifts enter Sunday’s second derby off the back of two losses. This match represents more than just state bragging rights — it’s a critical opportunity for the Swifts to stabilise their form and reaffirm their position as title favourites. A third consecutive loss would invite pressure from the chasing pack, as well as keep the GIANTS’ finals hopes alive.
The Name: Sophie Dwyer – the emerging Diamonds goal attack had her best game of the season last week, up against Diamonds teammate Courtney Bruce. Dwyer and shooting partner, Jo Harten, were at their dominating best, with Dwyer taking home player of the match honours with 122 Nissan Net Points, 32 goals and a shooting percentage of 91%.
The Number: 20 – Sunday’s match will be the 20th instalment of the NSW Derby. Each time the two New South Wales teams meet, they play for Carole Sykes Memorial Trophy. From the past 19 meetings, the Swifts lead the head-to-head count with 13 wins.
