Last Time they Met: The two teams last met in round seven, in a game that symbolised a game of tennis as the score ebbed and flowed. The GIANTS led at the first and third break, but it was the Swifts who held the lead when it mattered, taking a three-goal victory and bragging rights in the first edition of the 2023 NSW Derby. Maddie Hay was influential in attack, as was former Swift Lauren Moore who got her first nod in the starting seven.
What it means for the GIANTS: A win in Suncorp Super Netball means so much, but a win in a NSW Derby means that bit more. The GIANTS will be out to even the tally for season 2023 and close out the season with some winning momentum. Despite it being an away game, there will be patches of orange throughout a packed KRA and the GIANTS are looking to do them proud.
Where’s the opposition at: The Swifts have seven consecutive wins on the board and cemented their spot in the 2023 Super Netball Finals series. Troubled with a few injuries the past few weeks - Teigan O'Shannassy (calf) and Allie Smith (foot) - the Swifts haven't seemed to have lost their momentum. They come off an eight-goal victory over the Melbourne Vixens in round 11.
The Name: Carole Sykes - each time the GIANTS and the Swifts meet they play for the Carole Sykes Memorial trophy. Carole was a legend of Netball in NSW both as a player and coach and since the GIANTS entered the competition in 2017 the Carole Sykes Memorial Trophy has been contested with the Swifts as a symbol of state bragging rights. The Swifts currently hold the trophy following their win earlier this season in round seven.
The Number: 14 - Sunday marks the 14th edition of the NSW Derby. It's one of the greatest rivalries on the netball and sporting calendar and Sunday's match will display just that.
