Last Time They Met: It was the Swifts who claimed the derby victory the last time the sides met with a 76-52 win in a physical clash at Ken Rosewall Arena. The GIANTS were clinical in regular time – shooting at 95 percent (38/40) - but lost the turnover count 33-22 as they fell to an early lead deficit and could never recover. The game wasn’t without controversy, with star co-captain Jamie-Lee Price sent off for two minutes early in the game for a contentious ‘dangerous play’ call following a largely unavoidable clash with Allie Smith going for a 50-50 ball.
What it Means for the GIANTS: It’s been a season filled with inconsistency, but the GIANTS will be hoping to end their 2024 campaign with state bragging rights by taking down their rivals in the season-ending derby. Adding extra intrigue to Sunday’s final game of the season is the fact that the winner will avoid finishing the season in last place, with both sides tied on three wins each and sitting in seventh and eighth spot heading into the final game of their seasons. The GIANTS will be hoping their inspirational co-captain Price can finish off her strong season and lead the side to a derby victory, with the star midcourter starring with another standout performance in last week’s tough one-goal loss to the Mavericks. The GIANTS will also be out to celebrate their mighty Orange Army in Sunday’s final game of the season as part of Member Appreciation Round, with the derby a chance to say thank you for their unwavering support this season.
What it Means for the Opposition: The Swifts will enter Sunday’s clash riding a seven-match losing streak, with the round six win over the GIANTS their last victory. After falling to the Thunderbirds 60-48 last week, the Swifts will be hoping they can leave their best for last as they aim to avoid a last-placed finish with victory over the GIANTS in front of a huge derby crowd.
The Name: Amy Sligar – the Camden junior is well and truly having a breakout season having settled in the starting wing defence position in the back half of the season. The 22-year-old has recorded 10 intercepts and 27 deflections in her 12 games this season and is constantly winning over new fans. Sligar’s participation in Sunday’s match is clouded after a massive collision in the final minutes of last week’s game against the Mavericks which saw her leave the court with a wrist injury.
The Number: 118 v 123 – the GIANTS and the Swifts are separated by just five goals as the two teams to have scored the most amount of Super Shot this season. Since the new rule was introduced in 2020 the two team have been regular users of the two point scoring method. Helen Housby (Swifts) and Sophie Dwyer (GIANTS) sit first and second respectively for individual contributors in 2024.
