Last Time they Met: The two sides last met in round 10 of the 2023 Suncorp Super Netball season, with the GIANTS registering a six-goal win. Played at Saturday’s venue - Ken Rosewall Arena - the GIANTS trailed by a goal at half-time in a tight contest before a strong 19-14 final quarter saw them storm to a 70-64 win. The sides also met more recently in March in the Team Girls Cup pre-season competition, with the Lightning register a thrilling 42-41 victory.
What it Means for the GIANTS: Sitting as the only winless side in a tough start to their 2024 campaign, the GIANTS will be looking to get their season back on track with victory over the Lightning at home on Saturday. Familiar with the visitors following an epic pre-season clash, the GIANTS will be hoping to rediscover their best form as they look to learn from their mistakes in last week’s 20-goal loss to reigning premiers, the Thunderbirds.
What it Means for the Opposition: The Lightning will enter Ken Rosewall Arena looking to end a tough three-week stretch following their only win of the season in round one. Starting their 2024 campaign with an impressive 79-63 win over the Swifts at home, the Lightning have since lost three straight games – with their last outing a heart-breaking 65-64 loss to newcomers the Mavericks at home at UniSC Arena.
The Name: Liz Watson - the Origin Australian Diamonds captain now calls the Sunshine Coast home after 10 seasons with the Melbourne Vixens. Regarded as one of the best netballers in the world, Watson has cemented herself in the wing attack position both domestically and internationally, and also brings the ability to play centre when required. The 30-year-old bolsters an experienced attacking end for the Lightning, combining with the likes of current Diamond Cara Koenen and recently retired Diamond Steph Fretwell (nee Wood). Despite being in a losing side last week, Watson was named in the Nissan Net Points Team of the Week at wing attack with 121 points.
The Number: 11 – Saturday’s matchup between the GIANTS and the Lightning will be packed with star power – with 11 players across the sides either current or former international representatives for their respective countries.
