Last time they met: The two sides last met in the final round of the 2020 Suncorp Super Netball season, with the highly-anticipated biannual match played at Nissan Arena in Brisbane. For the GIANTS, they were playing to finish their season on a high while the Swifts were playing to determine their spot in the top four. After trailing by as much as 13 in the final quarter, five unanswered Super shots from Jo Harten levelled the scores to see the game play out to a draw.
What it means for the GIANTS: There’s not too many matches that mean much more than the NSW Derby – for either team. A victory for the GIANTS would even the head to head battle and be the perfect rebound for the past week they’ve endured. The GIANTS come off a controversial one-goal loss to the undefeated West Coast Fever, plus a five-day hotel quarantine period and preparation. A shortened, but proper preparation, will be refreshing for the GIANTS leading into the big match. With four wins and one loss, the GIANTS remain on top of the ladder.
Where’s the opposition at: The Swifts too know the importance of this fierce battle and currently sit one up on the head to head history. Whilst it’s a GIANTS home game, the Swifts return to Ken Rosewall Arena for a second week in row, coming off a nine goal win over the Collingwood Magpies. Captain Maddy Proud has been out for the past two weeks, while Helen Housby looked to be managing a finger injury in last weekend’s match. After five rounds the Swifts sit in third place with three wins and two losses.
The number: 9. Another chapter in this rivalry will be written when the two New South Wales side battle it out for bragging rights for the ninth time.
Key Match Up: We’re looking under the post again in the pre-empted match up of Jo Harten and Sarah Klau. Harten comes off a nine-goal Super Shot performance, while Klau got her name against nine gains.
