Last Time They Met: The GIANTS will be out for revenge on Sunday after falling to the Vixens by six goals when they last met back in round two this season. The GIANTS got off to a strong start in the early-season clash and held a four-goal quarter-time lead but were outscored 20-9 in the second term which helped the Vixens run out 61-55 winners at John Cain Arena.
What it Means for the GIANTS: The GIANTS will aim to carry over some of the eye-catching play shown last week despite the 75-66 loss to the red-hot Fever. After finding themselves down by eight goals at quarter-time, the GIANTS surged back into the contest with some brilliant play to level scores early in the third term. While they fell away late to go down to the Fever - who registered their fifth straight win – the GIANTS showed once again that their best netball can take it up to the league’s best sides. Consistency will be the key for the GIANTS on Sunday and if they can bring the intensity for four quarters then they’ll give themselves every chance of a victory over the Vixens. The side will however have to do it without star defender Jodi-Ann Ward who will miss the remainder of the season after rupturing her ACL last week. While Ward is a major loss, the circumstances present exciting opportunities for some more of the club’s young talent, with youngster Aimee Landrigan one who could get more exposure at the level after making her Suncorp Super Netball debut last week.
What it Means for the Opposition: The Vixens will enter KRA on Sunday with a record of three wins and four losses to sit in fifth place on the ladder. The visitors will be aiming for back-to-back wins after a 70-52 win over the Firebirds in Queensland last week. Leading by four at half-time, the Vixens turned up the heat in the second half as they outscored the home side 36-22 to set up the 18-goal win. Now sitting just a game outside of the top four, the Vixens will be hoping for a repeat of their round two win over the GIANTS as they push for a finals spot. Giving them extra confidence ahead of Sunday’s matchup, the Vixens have won seven of the past eight meetings with the GIANTS.
The Name: Jamie-Lee Price - The GIANTS superstar will once again be crucial to her side’s chances of taking down the Vixens on Sunday. A barometer for the GIANTS, Price will look to continue her strong form which saw her named in the Nissan Net Points Team of the Week last round after netting 106 Nissan Net Points with an impressive performance against the Fever. Price will have to be at her best on Sunday, with the midcourt star set to face off with Diamonds teammate Kate Moloney in a mouthwatering matchup.
The Number: 613- that’s the remarkable number of combined games coached at the National League level between the two coaching legends facing off on Sunday - Julie Fitzgerald and Simone McKinnis. The two most capped coaches of all time, the pair will face off for what is likely the last time in their current roles, with McKinnis stepping down as Vixens coach at the end of the season. The two icons have been pivotal figures in Australian netball and seeing them face off for possibly the final time will be a special moment on Sunday afternoon.
