Last Time they Met:
The two sides last faced off in the 2026 season opener. Jane Watson was valiant for the GIANTS, racking up a team-high 59.5 net points, while Sophie Dwyer proved accurate under the post, shooting at over 92%. Super shots kept the young GIANTS in the mix throughout, but it was the Mavericks who stood up in the end to take a nine-goal win at Red Energy in Bendigo.
What it Means for the GIANTS:
The GIANTS will be looking to produce the same quality of netball that pushed the undefeated Vixens to their limits last week. Sophie Dwyer went head-to-head in an enthralling battle with Jo Weston notching up 10 goals, five Super Shots and 25 feeds while Matisse Letherbarrow piled on 38 goals and six super shots in her best performance of the season. Still on the hunt for their first win, they will aim to replicate that level of performance and deliver a much-needed victory in front of a home crowd.
What it Means for the Opposition:
The Melbourne Mavericks come into this clash, looking to firm up their spot in the top four. They currently sit in fourth place with a 4-4 record and won’t be wanting to leave it to the back end of the season to lock in their finals spot.
The Name:
Matisse Letherbarrow
A proud product of the NSW pathway, Letherbarrow has emerged as one of the competition’s most dangerous long-range threats in 2026. The 24-year-old currently leads the league’s Super Shot tally with 32 - two ahead of Australian Diamond Kiera Austin (30) and nine clear of teammate Sophie Dwyer (23). In the GIANTS’ round one clash with the Mavericks in Bendigo, the hosts looked to have the game sealed early in the final quarter before Letherbarrow nailed three consecutive super shots to spark a late comeback and give her side a sniff. It’s become a familiar storyline this season, with the sharpshooter repeatedly stepping up in crucial moments to keep the GIANTS in the contest.
The Narrative:
There will be no shortage of emotion or intrigue in Sunday’s clash with familiar faces, fierce rivalries, and plenty on the line. Former GIANT and 2026 Maverick Jamie-Lee Price (789) currently leads the competition’s Net Points tally, 63.5 points clear of Vixens skipper, Kate Maloney, who sits second.
The GIANTS are still searching for their first win of the season, while the Mavericks will be eager to sure up their top four spot. The last time the Mavs visited KRA, inaugural GIANT Jo Harten delivered a fairytale finish to her career, sinking a Super Shot on the buzzer to seal a memorable 72-59 victory.
The Notes:
“We’ve shown we can match it with the best sides when we back ourselves. The key for us is capitalising when we win ball and not being afraid of those moments. We came close against the Mavs in round one and pushed the ladder leaders last weekend, so there’s real belief in the group. We can’t wait to get back in front of a home crowd on Sunday.” - Nerida Stewart
