Last Time They Met (Season 2022): The GIANTS and the Collingwood Magpies last met in round 10, at the Silverdome in Launceston. It was the Magpies who had the upper in the first half, out to strong start at their home away from home, leading by six at the main break. However, coach Julie Fitzgerald delivered one of her best half-time addresses to motivate the team and produce a 15-goal turn around and keep their season alive.
Last Time They Met (Finals): In the inaugural season of Suncorp Super Netball, the two AFL- affiliated franchises met in the 2017 Minor Semi Final, at the Quay Centre in Sydney Olympic Park. It’s a game that the remaining inaugural GIANTS speak so highly about. After trailing by four goals with five minutes remaining, the GIANTS put out an inspiring performance to take a memorable one-goal win to proceed through to the next round of finals.
What it Means for the GIANTS: After falling short in the 2021 Suncorp Super Netball Grand Final, the GIANTS have been more determined than ever to go one further. After securing a finals berth and home final, the GIANTS are in a position to do just that. After playing out the maximum three-game finals series in Queensland last year, the GIANTS are relishing the opportunity to play in front of a home crowd this weekend.
Where’s the Opposition At: The Magpies come off the happiest loss in Suncorp Super Netball history. Their two-goal loss to the Melbourne Vixens in the Melbourne Derby last week saw them qualify for the 2022 finals series by .19 of a percentage. The Magpies dug deep to do enough, playing out the round 14 match without coach Nicole Richardson, co-captain Ash Brazill, Jamaican defender Jodi-Ann Ward and midcourter Maggie Lind.
The Name: Jo Harten – the GIANTS captain who has played in every GIANTS game to date, enters the match in impressive form. Harten comes off an MVP performance and will match up Roses teammate and fellow round 14 MVP Geva Mentor.
The Number: 1,400 – the number of days since the GIANTS last hosted a home finals match in Sydney.
The News: Sunday’s match will be the first Suncorp Super finals match to be played at New South Wales’ new home of Netball, Ken Rosewall Arena. Originally a tennis centre, the venue underwent re-developments to be a multi-purpose sports and event precinct and has been home to the GIANTS since 2020.
