Last time they met: The two teams last met in round 11 with the match played at Netball SA stadium. In a week of changing fixtures there wasn’t too much time to overthink the match up. It was even opening half to the game with the GIANTS winning the first, the Swifts the second and the scored all tied up at the main break. However, it was the third quarter where the GIANTS set themselves up for the win with a 18-13 quarter. At the final whistle it was the GIANTS by four, securing their first win against the Swifts since round 2018.
What it means for the GIANTS: It’s a huge game for the GIANTS, with a win securing them a place in the 2021 Suncorp Super Netball Grand Final. The GIANTS have played in two finals series in the five-year history of Super Netball with their last appearance in 2018.
Where’s the opposition at: The Swifts come off a strong performance in round 14 to secure a double chance in the finals series. They were strong from the get-go scoring 20-goals in each of the opening two quarters. Sam Wallace was at her usual best scoring 50-goals at 96%, while at the other end of the court Sarah Klau finished the match with nine gains. This is the third straight finals appearance for the Swifts, with the cross-town rivals last taking out the championship in 2019.
The Number: Five. The GIANTS have five players that have never played in a finals series at this level. Sophie Dwyer, Maddie Hay, Amy Parmenter, Tilly McDonell and Matisse Letherbarrow.
Key Match Up: Jo Harten v Sarah Klau. Both these players were critical to their teams success in round 14. Harten was at her best shooting 30 goals plus six Super Shots with a combined percentage of 95%. Her decision making and leadership in the front end helped guide the GIANTS to a superior victory. Klau has been a solid and consistent performer in the Swifts end all season. She’s their number one ball getter with 32 intercepts, 18 deflections to gain and 20 rebounds.
