The GIANTS showed patches of strong defensive intent and attacking promise but were unable to match the Melbourne Mavericks' sustained pressure, with the final scoreline reading 60-41 at Ken Rosewall Arena on Sunday evening.
Despite the result, there were encouraging performances across the court for the GIANTS, led by the tireless efforts of defender Erin O’Brien and midcourter Hope White.
Sophie Dwyer was the early focal point in attack, finishing efficiently when given space.
Defensively, both teams were active from the outset.
O’Brien led the GIANTS’ defensive efforts with early gains and intercept pressure, supported by Jodi-Ann Ward and Amy Sligar, who applied consistent disruption around the circle edge. The Mavericks held a narrow 12-10 lead at quarter-time after a tightly contested opening period.
The visitors lifted their tempo in the second term and began to control possession, making it difficult for the GIANTS to establish any rhythm.
Despite the best efforts of the home side, the Mavericks were able to convert defensive pressure into scoreboard impact, blowing out their lead for a halftime scoreline of 32-19.
The third quarter followed a similar pattern, with the visitors maintaining control across all areas of the court.
The GIANTS continued to compete hard defensively, with O’Brien finishing with five gains, one intercept, four deflections and two rebounds in a standout display for the hosts.
White remained one of the GIANTS’ most consistent contributors to finish with 20 feeds and seven goal assists.
The Mavericks closed out the match to secure a 19-goal victory.
