Last time they met: It was in the 2021 Suncorp Super Netball decider that these two teams last met. For those that are new to the GIANTS, it didn’t go our way, and for our longstanding fans, the hunger and drive is even stronger. In 2021 the two sides faced off against each other on four occasions – one in Sydney, one in Adelaide and two in Brisbane.
What it means for the GIANTS: The GIANTS enter Saturday’s match with many layers of motivation. Not only are the bragging rights of a NSW Derby on the line, but a Grand Final re-match and a return of netball to Ken Rosewall Arena. With the ladder wiped clean, it’s every teams’ wish to get their season off to a strong start.
Where’s the opposition at: The Swifts enter the 2022 season as reigning premiers, in a bid to be just the second team to go back-to-back in Super Netball’s six-year history. Ranked highly among the teams as the side to beat, the Swifts enter the new season with a target on their back. They return in 2022 with their core starting seven, along with a fresh bench of Allie Smith (Vixens), Teigan O’Shannassy (elevated from training partner) and Kelly Singleton (elevated training partner).
The Name: Tilly McDonell – the enthusiastic and determined up-and-coming defender is looking likely to get the nod for the vacant goalkeeper bib, the only potential change to the GIANTS’ 2021 go-to starting seven. If given the nod, it will be the first time McDonell has been named in the starting seven and will be given the tough task to shut down the powerful Sam Wallace.
The Number: 293 – Saturday will mark 293 days since the last NSW Derby played in NSW
The News: The GIANTS will be without Amy Sligar for the opening round clash with the exciting new midcourter ruled out of the match under the health and safety protocols.
