Last time they met: The last time the two teams met, to play for competition points, was round eight on Sunday, June 20. The match marked the last time the GIANTS hosted a home game at Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney Olympic Park. The GIANTS finished the match with a convincing 16-point win, following an impressive 15-8 opening quarter. April Brandley had a cracking match, topping the Nissan Net Points, recording eight gains and four intercepts. The two teams faced off three times throughout the 2022 pre-season - two games in Orange and one in the Team Girls Cup. The Thunderbirds were the more slick side in Orange, taking wins by three and 13 points respectively. In Team Girls Cup, it was a slightly different story. The GIANTS led for 37 minutes of the 40-minute match, but a strong run home from a in-form Thunderbirds team saw them take a late lead and a one-goal victory at the final whistle.
What it means for the GIANTS: When Sunday’s match comes, the GIANTS will be blocking out the added outside noise this week has brought and give it their all. Aware of the challenges, the GIANTS will #StandUnited and back what they have available to get the job done. The game goes on and the GIANTS will be playing hard for the four points.
Where’s the Opposition at: The Thunderbirds are in the best position the club has been in since the inception of Suncorp Super Netball. They come off a round one win and sit second on the table. There form and squad is consistent and they’re a team everyone is flagging as genuine contenders.
The Name: Matisse Letherbarrow. After being a part of the GIANTS’ list for the past two seasons as both an extended squad member (2020) and replacement player (2021), Leatherbarrow is expected to get her first starting seven listing in round two. The 20-year-old will line up alongside captain Jo Harten and come up against an international defensive duo in Shamera Sterling and Latanya Wilson.
The Number: 26 – Given the availability within the squad, it is guaranteed that there will be at least one debutant on the weekend, with someone set to become GIANT #26.
The News: The GIANTS were declined a request to postpone Sunday’s match given the availability of their entire and extended squad. Six of the GIANTS’ 18 players are unavailable, plus two will be subject to medical clearance after exiting isolation during the week. To read more on the topic, click here.
