The GIANTS and six other teams will participate in round one of Suncorp Super Netball’s new pilot program this weekend in the opening round of Super Netball Reserves.
Developed in consultation with member organisations and Suncorp Super Netball teams and supported by the Australian Players’ Association, Super Netball Reserves will run over the next five weekends, finishing on July 7.
The newly introduced competition was established to support talent identification and to provide additional match play for athletes on the cusp of Suncorp Super Netball.
In its pilot form in 2024, teams will not play for competition points.
Playing as the GIANTS Netball Reserves, the club’s side will take on the Victorian Fury at John Cain Arena this Saturday following the Suncorp Super Netball match between the Melbourne Vixens and GIANTS.
The GIANTS will travel to Melbourne with a 10-player squad, with athletes from Saturday’s round eight Super Netball team also able to drop back and participate.
Named in the round one team are training partners Monika ‘Otai, Kelly Singleton and Charli Fidler.
GIANTS Netball Reserves Head Coach Jenny O’Keeffe said she was looking forward to the pilot competition kicking off.
“It’s all happened rather quickly but we’re looking forward to getting out there and playing some netball,” she said.
“For round one we’ve selected a mix of youth and experience with a combination of our training partners as well as athletes from our current Academy setup.
“Throughout the seven-week competition we’re excited to test the depth of talent in our Academy and provide opportunities to those who are training well and show potential."
GIANTS Netball Reserves will take on Victorian Fury at 7:20pm on Saturday at John Cain Arena.
Super Netball Reserves games will not be live streamed and full-time scores will published via GIANTS Netball socials
