The GIANTS have further strengthened the next generation of the GIANTS Netball team by adding two more of New South Wales’ most promising young stars to their Training Partner list for 2021.
GIANTS Academy athletes Amy Sligar and Jemma Donoghue have both been added as Training Partners effective immediately.
Sligar, a defensive midcourter and Donoghue, a tall defender, are both currently in the Australian 21U World Youth Cup Squad.
The pair are two of seven GIANTS athletes currently in a condensed squad who are scheduled to attend a camp this month.
Head Coach Julie Fitzgerald said she was thrilled to be able to upgrade both athletes.
“It’s a reward for their hard work and advancement in the academy program and it’s now an opportunity for them to test themselves in the next level of an elite netball training environment,” she said.
“They’ve made a seamless transition into the top program so far and I look forward to seeing what they both achieve.
“Amy is a work horse and is definitely a star in the making.
“And Jemma is improving each and every session as she gets to learn and play on some of the best shooters in the league.”
Both players will travel to Orange as part of the GIANTS’ squad this weekend.
Amy Sligar
Amy made her debut with the Canberra Giants in the Deakin University Australia Netball League (ANL) in 2019. She is a dominant mid-court player whose strong athletic ability and aerial skills have seen her included in the current 21U World Youth Squad. She has been a selected member of NSW 17s and 19s for the past 3 years and is currently in the 2021 NSW 19s squad.
Jemma Donoghue
Jemma is a talented defender who was selected into the 21U World Youth Cup Squad after an impressive performance at the 2020 Netball Australia Centre of Excellence Camp. After a number of years as a centre court player, she made a successful transition to the defensive goal circle. Her ability to wear an opposition player down with her tight one on one defence, vertical jump and ability to read the play makes her a formidable opponent.
2021 Training Partners: Jemma Donoghue, Clare Iongi, Matisse Letherbarrow, Annie Miller, Amy Sligar, Latika Tombs.
