The GIANTS have re-signed defender Erin O’Brien, committing to the young gun for a further two seasons.
O’Brien - a Hills District junior – made her GIANTS debut in round 14 of season 2023 before earning her first Suncorp Super Netball contract ahead of the 2024 season.
In her first contracted year she played seven games, including the round nine victory over the Firebirds where she got the start at goalkeeper and played 55 minutes to earn herself the fan voted Most Valuable GIANT award.
The re-signing is a testament to O’Brien’s talent and potential and the GIANTS’ commitment to supporting local talent.
The 20-year-old said she is excited to re-sign with the club.
“I love this club, and I am so lucky to be a part of such a talented group of girls with incredible coaches and support staff,” O’Brien said.
“I am so grateful to receive a multi-season contract and am ready to get stuck into training to make sure I can be the best I can be for the team as we continue to grow and build as we strive for success.”
For both the team and the first-year player, season 2024 was full of lessons and learning.
“Although we weren’t as successful as we would have liked, we stayed united and connected as a group which was extremely special to be a part of,” she said.
“I have learnt so much from a personal perspective. I learnt the importance of resilience and I’m extremely determined and hungry to go again in season 2025.”
When asked what she wants to get out of next season, the young defender said she wants to continue to make the most of every opportunity.
“Coming into my second season I want to continue to work hard to ensure I am the fittest and strongest I have ever been and continue to make the most of every opportunity I get to learn and become the best player I can for this team.”
GIANTS head coach Julie Fitzgerald said she is thrilled to secure the signature of the promising defender.
“Erin has so much potential and is a star of the future, so we’re excited to see her remain in the orange and charcoal,” Fitzgerald said.
“We were really pleased with the growth and development we saw from her this season, and she thrived from the access and support of all our high-performance staff.
“We look forward to seeing her continue to develop and she is certainly the type of player we believe supports the direction of where we want to take this club in the future.”
O’Brien joins Tilly McDonell to re-sign in the off season, with one vacant contract spot remaining.
