English Rose, Jo Harten, has today announced her retirement from international netball.
Harten ends her international career as one of the most influential figures in English Netball.
The Essex-born goal shooter began her career with the Roses in 2007, debuting against Barbados in the 2007 Netball World Cup.
Harten went on to represent her country at four World Cups and three Commonwealth Games, including the historic triumph on the Gold Coast in 2018 where England secured the gold medal – a moment Harten said she will remember as long as she lives.
Signing off on her international career after 16 years and 117 games, Harten leaves the Roses’ program as one of the recognisable and highly regarded players.
The 34-year-old describes her 16-year Roses career as one of the most fulfilling experiences of her life.
“Working together with amazing athletes to achieve a common goal has what it’s always been about for me,” Harten said.
“I’m so grateful for the experience and will cherish the memories made with teammates and management, that have all become family over the last 16 years.
One of the most passionate and smartest competitors in world netball, Harten said she felt she could not meet her own high standards anymore.
“I know what it takes to compete against the best in the world, but I feel I cannot give 100 per cent of myself both physically and mentally at this stage,” she said.
“The decision has been made with both me and my Roses family in mind, leading into the World Cup campaign.”
Harten paid tribute to those who have supported her throughout her international career.
“There are many people to thank none more so than my family near and far, especially my dedicated parents, supporting me every step of the way. They love the game just as much as me,” she said.
“A special mention also to my junior coaches Carol Bull and Jean Cant from Harlow for their continued support.
“I’d like to say thank you to the amazing England Netball community, fans, supporters and sponsors. You are what makes the game great and your support throughout my career has been incredible.”
As for Harten’s time in Suncorp Super Netball, her future is still bright, bright orange.
“I’m still 100 per cent committed to the GIANTS,” she said.
“The decision to step away from the Roses actually allows me to dedicate all my time and energy into the program here at the GIANTS.”
While Harten left the court injured during the GIANTS' round six match on Sunday, she is expected to line up for the GIANTS this Saturday when they host the Swifts in the 13th edition of the NSW Derby.
