The Sydney Sirens have secured the signature of former GIANTS Claire O'Brien, with the midcourter returning home after five seasons in New Zealand.
The 28-year-old is no stranger to Super Netball, having debuted for the NSW Swifts in 2017 before making the move across town to join the GIANTS, where she made her club debut in 2020.
Since making the move across the Tasman in 2021, O'Brien has flourished - helping the Northern Mystics to the 2021 ANZ Premiership title alongside fellow Siren Grace Nweke before going on to establish herself as one of the competition's most respected midcourters across spells with the Mystics, Magic and Stars.
Her performances earned selection into the Silver Ferns environment, culminating in international debut honours and a Constellation Cup triumph in 2024.
"I could not be more thrilled about returning to Sydney and being a part of this new franchise," O'Brien said.
"I spent the 2020 season as a GIANTS Training Partner and the opportunity to be part of the next chapter in the club's history was too good to pass up.
"I’ve had so many memorable years of my life in Sydney and I can't wait to get cracking with the rest of the squad. I’m looking forward to getting to know our fans, members and the wider community as we help grow netball across the state.
"I truly believe this Sirens team can do something special, and I'm honoured to be a part of it."
Sydney Sirens Head Coach Nerida Stewart said O'Brien's experience and attacking craft would make her a valuable addition to the club's inaugural squad.
"Claire is a player who has continued to evolve her game year after year, and we're excited to welcome her home to Sydney," Stewart said.
"She's a controlled and dynamic attacker who consistently creates opportunities for those around her. Her ability to read the game and influence play makes her a valuable addition to our squad.
"Claire has a tremendous engine and takes a strategic approach to her performance.
"Just as importantly, Claire is a fantastic person and a great fit for our club. She already has strong connections within our playing group, and her fun and bubbly personality will be a huge asset as we continue building the Sydney Sirens."
O'Brien becomes the ninth confirmed member of the Sydney Sirens' inaugural squad, alongside Amy Sligar, Sophie Dwyer, Molly Jovic, Grace Nweke, Jodi-Ann Ward, Erin O'Brien, Matisse Letherbarrow and Hope White, with one roster position still to be announced.
