At just 20 years of age, Matilda McDonell is the youngest player in the GIANTS’ contracted squad for 2020.
In 2019 McDonell was introduced to the world of elite netball, earning her first contract with the GIANTS.
The speedy and athletic defender was picked directly from the Netball NSW pathway and was still playing for the Under-19s side in her first year as a Suncorp Super Netball athlete.
GIANTS Head Coach Julie Fitzgerald said McDonell is one of the club’s most improved players.
“Tilly has worked and continued to improve since joining the GIANTS and she will be pushing hard to make more of a contribution to the on-court team in 2020,” Fitzgerald said.
“Hard work both in the gym and on the court have helped her to step up to level required to compete at the SSN standard.”
McDonell is just one of many young and talented local NSW players within the GIANTS setup.
With limited court time during 2019, the addition of the rolling substitutions rule will likely assist players like McDonell in increasing their court time and exposure in 2020.
“Tilly is without doubt one of the rising stars of netball and our fans will enjoy watching her grow across the season,” said Fitzgerald.
The season is set to begin on the 1st of August, with the first phase of the fixture set to be released by the end of the week.
