With the 2022 season set to commence in the last weekend of March, pre-season is well and truly underway for the GIANTS.
With a staggered return to training based on age, 2021 season loads and post-season commitments, the first phase of preparations for 2022 has been labelled as ‘athlete development’.
“The initial focus has been to make them better as athletes,” said Head of Strength and Conditioning and Sport Science, Tom Reddin.
“We’ve been focusing on making them faster, making them stronger, building their endurance and improving their movement qualities.
“I’ve been happy so far, but the proof will be in the pudding when they hit the court.”
Variety has been the key during the first block of pre-season, utilising all the facilities at GIANTS HQ, while also taking some sessions off-site.
“We’ve been able to get a good balance between the training work done in the gym but mix it up with running work out on the oval and sprint work on the track,” he said.
“We hit the court for the first official time this week as a group and we’ve also been taking some sessions off-site to keep things fresh and create a good chemistry and bond no matter what the situation.
“We’ve been to the sand dunes, tried water polo and have one last surprise ahead of the Christmas break.”
Another key event prior to Christmas, which each club tackles differently, is fitness testing.
“We haven’t done our formal testing yet, that will be in a few weeks. We’ve tested strength and power qualities and a few bespoke fitness challenges on the Wattbike and other equipment in the gym,” said Mr Reddin.
“The formal endurance, the yoyo test, is scheduled in a few weeks’ time and we’ll also do a timed speed test leading up the Christmas break.”
The 2022 Super Netball Season will begin on the weekend of March 26, with a big big homecoming anticipated for the 2021 Minor Premiers.
