Internationally renowned defender, Jane Watson, has announced her retirement from professional netball, bringing an end to an outstanding career that will leave a lasting impact on the sport.
After 15 seasons competing at the highest level, Watson confirmed she will step away from professional netball, closing a chapter defined by leadership, consistency and excellence on the court.
Widely regarded as one of the game's premier defenders, the Silver Ferns legend built a remarkable résumé throughout her career. A World Cup champion, Constellation Cup winner, dual ANZ Premiership Player of the Year and dual premiership player, Watson established herself as one of New Zealand netball's most decorated and respected athletes.
Renowned for her determination, athleticism and ability to perform under pressure, she earned the admiration of teammates, coaches, opponents and fans alike, becoming one of the sport's most influential figures.
The 2026 season marked a new challenge for Watson as she made the move across the Tasman to compete in the Suncorp Super Netball competition for the first time in her decorated career. While her arrival generated significant excitement, injuries sustained in round four limited her impact on the court and curtailed the Australian chapter of her career.
As she brings her playing career to a close, Watson leaves behind a remarkable legacy built on excellence, resilience and service to the sport. Her contribution to netball, both in New Zealand and internationally, will continue to inspire future generations for years to come.
Reflecting on her decision, Watson said she leaves the game with immense gratitude.
“This game has given me more than I ever could have imagined,” she said.
“I've been lucky enough to experience unforgettable moments, build great friendships and have the honour of representing New Zealand doing something I love.
“To every teammate, coach and franchise I’ve been part of throughout my career, thank you. I’ve been lucky enough to share this journey with some incredible people who believed in me, challenged me and helped shape me both as a player and as a person.
"To our whānau and friends, thank you for the incredible support you've given me throughout my career. From Mum and Dad never missing a chance to cheer me on, to those who helped look after our home, animals and Tia while I’ve been playing in Australia, your love and generosity have meant everything. And to my darling, Santana, thank you for being my rock through it all. Your sacrifices, unwavering support and everything you've done for our family made this journey possible, and I couldn't have done it without you.
“While I’m stepping away from the court, I’ll always be grateful for everything netball has given me. I leave with a full heart, legs back intact and so much appreciation for everyone who has been part of the journey. I’m so excited for this next chapter and for the opportunity to spend more time at home with the people I love most.”
GIANTS Netball Head Coach Nerida Stewart congratulated Watson on a formidable career.
“Jane's career has been nothing short of exceptional, and she should be immensely proud of everything she has achieved,” Stewart said.
“Although injuries prevented Jane from spending as much time on court as she would have liked this season, the resilience and determination she showed throughout that process reflected exactly why she has been able to achieve so much throughout her career.
“Jane leaves the game having achieved almost everything there is to achieve. She has been an outstanding ambassador for netball, a fierce competitor and a role model for so many people.
“We are grateful for the contribution she has made to our club and proud to have been part of the final chapter of such a remarkable career. Everyone at the GIANTS wishes Jane and her family every happiness in the years ahead.”
Watson is expected to return to the court this Sunday for one final game, when the GIANTS host the Swifts at Ken Rosewall Arena.
