The GIANTS have secured the signature of young gun Sophie Dwyer, with the up-and-coming shooter to be a GIANT until at least the end of 2023.
Dwyer shone for the GIANTS in 2021, with the 19-year-old becoming the GIANTS’ first-choice goal attack after a season ending injury to Kiera Austin in round one.
The 19-year-old has had a remarkable rise to the elite level after joining the GIANTS’ squad as a training partner in 2020, travelling with the team as part of the extended squad to the hub in Queensland and making her Super Netball debut.
Dwyer then signed her first full-time contract with the GIANTS’ side ahead of the 2021 season.
After stepping into the goal attack position in the second quarter of round one this season, she hasn’t looked backed.
Dwyer approached the remaining 16 games of the season with poise and confidence beyond her years and was a breakout star of the 2021 season.
She finished her first contracted season with 389 goals, 52 Super Shots, 139 goal assists and 772 Nissan Net Points (the third highest of any GIANT).
Dwyer said she is thrilled to sign with the GIANTS for another two seasons.
“We are building something really special at this club and I’m grateful and excited to be a part of it. I can’t wait to get back out on court again next year,” she said.
“I learned a lot from the 2021 season, and I can’t wait to continue developing my game over the next couple of years.
“It’s any young netballer’s dream to play at the elite level and to do it with the GIANTS is extra special.”
Dwyer is the third GIANT to sign a two-year deal, the maximum currently allowed based on the league’s new licensing and contract deal.
Clubs have until October 8 to finalise their playing squads for next season.
In-from defender April Brandley and star midcourter Jamie-Lee Price have also committed to the club until 2023, while Sam Poolman announced her retirement and Kristiana Manu’a opted to move to the New Zealand National League.
